Oak Island Sunset Guide: Where the Sun Sets, Best Spots by Season and Photo Tips
Where the Sun Sets, Best Spots by Season and Photo Tips
Oak Island faces directly south, so from late fall through early spring you can watch the sun set over the ocean from the beach. In summer the sun sets well to the northwest, over the marsh and the Intracoastal Waterway, which makes the waterway side of the island the better seat from roughly May through August.
Quick facts
- Orientation: the beach runs east to west and faces south. The Atlantic is south of the island, the Intracoastal Waterway north.
- Ocean sunsets: late fall through early spring, when the sun sets far enough south to drop toward the water.
- Summer sunsets: the sun sets in the west-northwest, over the waterway and mainland.
- Sunset times: about 5 p.m. in early December, up to about 8:25 p.m. in late June (Eastern time).
- Golden hour: roughly the last 30 to 40 minutes before sunset.
- Twilight: civil twilight runs about 25 minutes after sunset, and the sky often holds color through it.
Why a south-facing beach is different
Most of the East Coast faces east, which is great for sunrises and useless for sunsets over water. Oak Island is one of the Brunswick Islands, a run of beaches where the coast bends and faces south. The town points out that you can see both sunrise and sunset over the ocean from the same beach, and the regional visitor bureau adds the fine print: that works from late fall through early spring. In summer the sun sits too far north.
Here's the geometry. The sun's setting point swings across the horizon through the year. At Oak Island's latitude (about 34 degrees north), standard solar geometry, which you can check for any date on NOAA's solar calculator, puts the winter solstice sunset around 240 degrees, or west-southwest, and the summer solstice sunset around 300 degrees, or west-northwest. A south-facing beach looking west along the shoreline sees the winter sun drop toward the water. The summer sun sets behind you and to the right, over the island, the marsh and the waterway.
Best sunset spots by season
November through February: the beach
This is ocean sunset season. Walk out at a west-end beach access and look west down the shoreline. The farther west you go, the more open water you have on that line. The Point, at the far west end of West Beach Drive (or the end of Kings Lynn Drive), looks out over Lockwood Folly Inlet and is the classic winter spot. The beach is quieter, the light is lower all afternoon, and sunset comes early, around 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
March, April, September and October: either side
In the shoulder months the sun sets close to due west. From the beach it lands near the far end of the shoreline, and from the waterway side it sets over the marsh. The Oak Island Pier at 705 Ocean Drive is free to walk and puts you 880 feet out over the water with a long view west along the beach. Sunsets run from about 7:20 p.m. in mid-March and mid-September to about 6:40 p.m. in mid-October.
May through August: the Intracoastal side
Summer is waterway season. The sun goes down in the west-northwest, over the marsh and the Intracoastal, so head for a north-side dock or overlook. The town maintains several:
- NW 1st Street Overlook, at the north end of NW 1st Street.
- 30th Place West Dock, a floating dock at the north street end.
- Veterans Park at 14th NE and Yacht Drive, with a waterfront boardwalk.
- SW Yacht Drive stairs at the far west end of SW Yacht Drive.
Summer sunsets land between about 8 p.m. and 8:27 p.m., the latest of the year coming at the end of June.
Golden hour photo tips
- Arrive 45 minutes early. On a mid-October evening the golden hour starts about 34 minutes before sunset. Give yourself time to find a spot and set up before it starts.
- Stay 20 minutes late. Civil twilight lasts about 25 minutes after sunset. Clouds often light up after the sun is down, and most people leave too soon.
- Use the water. Wet sand at low tide reflects the sky. Check NOAA tide predictions for the area before you go.
- Put something in the foreground. Pier pilings, marsh grass, dock rails or a person make a better photo than an empty horizon.
- Expose for the sky. Tap the brightest part of the sky on your phone to darken the shot and keep the color, then lift the shadows later.
- Mind the dunes and the turtles. Stay on the marked accesses. In nesting season (May through October), skip the flash and keep lights off the sand.
End the day at the Hideout
The easiest summer sunset seat on the island is a waterfront deck. The Oak Island Hideout sits on 57th Place West, right on the Intracoastal Waterway, with a waterfront deck and sunset views. It has been open since May 2022, with Lonerider beer and bourbon whiskey, a full kitchen, live music and trivia. Dogs are welcome outside, it's wheelchair accessible, and reservations are accepted, which is worth doing on a clear summer evening. Check today's hours on the Hideout page.
